Worlds Largest Act of Faith

The Kumbh Mela holds its significance ever since the ages. Legend has it that once the Devtas (the Gods) lost their strength, and to regain their strength, they decided to churn the primordial ocean of milk on the advice of the Bramha (the God of creation) for Amrit (Nectar), which would make them immortal after drinking. Since they had lost their strength, they sought the help of Rakshas (the demons) and agreed to share the Amrit equally at the end. The Mandar Mountain was used as churning rod and Vasuki (the king of serpents) as the rope for churning.

After churning for 1000 years, the Dhanvantri (the divine healer) appeared with “Kumbh” (the pot) in his palms containing nectar.

However, a fight broke out between the Gods and the Demons for taking the whole Amrit which went on 12 human years.

During the fight, Garuda, the celestial bird flew away with the Kumbh holding the nectar. Due to his Flight from one place to another, the drops of nectar fell at 12 places on earth .To commemorate this event, People gather at these places giving it the name, Kumbh Mela.
